The Translation Of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat In Modern Arabic Literature: A Critical Study

Abstract
The status of Khayyam as a poet remained overlooked and not considered significant, only within narrow limits. In the literary history of Persian literature, Khayyam was not regarded as a poet on par with the great Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Hafez, Saadi, Jalaluddin Rumi, and others. However, a shift occurred in the modern era, particularly in the nineteenth century, when the English poet Fitzgerald published his translation of Khayyam's quatrains. This translation caused a sensation, and the impact of Khayyam's quatrains on modern Arabic literature was substantial. Those who paid attention to Khayyam included the scholars of the Diwan school, such as Al-Aqqad, Al-Mazini, and Shukri, whose translations led to the emergence of a unique literary phenomenon in modern Arabic literature, known as the "Khayyam Phenomenon".
