Intercultural Communicative Competence In The Efl Classroom

Authors : Soltani Salima . Brakni Dalila .

Abstract

Being able to communicate effectively and find common grounds of understanding between cultures is not an easy task to do. Intercultural communication involves the appropriate exchange and negotiation of meaning between people of different backgrounds and cultural behaviours. In some cases, and because cultures are in continuous interaction, one may view the other’s culture as strange, hostile and threatening when it comes to questions like values, identity and religion for instance. Accordingly, intercultural dialogue could be an important means to overcome these intercultural misunderstandings and to communicate effectively and appropriately. However it remains one of the key challenges facing modern societies today. The present article highlights some dominant definitions and frames of intercultural communicative competences throughout academia. Similarly, it aims to demonstrate what intercultural communicative competence would mean in practice in foreign language classrooms and in the Algerian context per se, in addition to key models as how to assess ICC as well as some practical suggestions and techniques to scaffold learners’ intercultural communicative competences.
