Tensions Between Robotic And Human Panoramas Of Translation: Uncovering Learners’ Of English Attitudes Towards Translation Technologies

Authors : Boudjelal Mustapha .

Abstract

The study aims at exploring the status quo of translation technologies in relation to EFL classrooms, and translation instruction in particular, with the focus being on learners’ attitudes towards them. To examine the locus of translation technologies in EFL settings, both the subjects of computing and translation are explored. To penetrate learners’ attitudes towards translation technologies and how these views affect classroom practices and performances, a questionnaire had been administered to 38 learners of English (1st year master degree literature and civilization),University of Mostaganem). Another questionnaire had been administered to 10 university teachers of English to know whether or not learners of English master the use of translation technologies. The study reveals that that the contents of the subject of translation superficially and theoretically approach limited types of translation technologies. On the other hand, the contents of the subject of computing support the basics of computing which do not help much acquiring a mastery of translation technologies. Most importantly, in addition to learners’ negative attitudes towards translation technologies, they seem to be unable to use them properly.
