The liberalization of the banking sector in Algeria took place with the promulgation of the law No. 90-10 of the 14th April 1990 on currency and credit, which replaced the law oh 1986 on the banking system and the credit has not been implemented. This openness coupled with the significant patrimonial reinforcement of public banks has created a strong potential for strengthening banking intermediation at the national level. This paper is mainly dedicated to the presentation of the Algerian banking system with an analysis of the important reforms that have been undertaken since the 1980’s to liberalize this sector and modernize it.
