Anaphoric expressions are particularly interesting for the study of speech because they require the use of the capacities of the working memory (to identify and access the referent of a pronoun, for example), as well as a semantico-inferential treatment more or less deep depending on the type of anaphora (direct or indirect). This article studies the mechanisms of demonstrative anaphora in a particular textual genre, namely the journalistic article. Thus, if personal pronouns are privileged tools for accessing very focused speech referents in working memory; demonstrative anaphora would signal a reference change by directing attention to less salient referents. Our aim is to present some semantico-referential characteristics of these anaphoras in order to describe in detail the semantic and pragmatic factors that affect their use and their interpretation in the press discourse
