Teaching Esp By Efl Teachers - From Mission Impossible To Mission Feasible – Teaching Common Core Communication

Authors : Missoum Maamar .

Abstract

The literature on the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) situation in Algeria has substantiated the dilemma teachers often face about the contents to teach in ESP courses. This research aims at exploring a possible solution to the conundrum of ESP syllabi. The research methodology used to achieve the research purpose consists of analysing the ESP needs of employees in the petroleum sector in Southern Algeria. The data collected were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings indicate that the mission of ESP teachers, especially those who have training in teaching EFL only, can become more feasible by adopting a common-core communicative syllabus. Accordingly, ESP teachers are offered in this paper a communicative common-core flexible framework for ESP courses along with a simple and economical needs analysis procedure. Hopefully, these suggestions will contribute in making ESP courses more conducive to success and satisfaction for both teachers and learners.
