The decolonization of Western Sahara remains as one of the most long standing issues within the framework of the United Nations.Since 1963, Western Sahara is registered in the list of non self governing territories of the United Nations General Assembly Fourth Committee. The departure of Spain followed by the military annexion of this territory by Morocco and Mauritania in 1975, made more difficult the resolution of this issue . The Polisario Front ran a liberation war against Morocco until 1991. A ceasefire agreement was signed between both parties, in view of reaching a political solution, allowing the self determination of Sahrawi people. However, Morocco has reneged on its commitment arguing that the organization of a referendum was no more possible. The United Nations has been involved in the conflict management since its very beginning. Nowadays, The Front Polisario and Morocco are invited to reach a political solution, mutually acceptable by the parties, under the auspices of the United Nations.
