Mahmoud Darwich is probably one of the most difficult authors to be approached, perhaps because he is a complex character. Political poet? Poet of resistance? Exile poet? Much to Darwich's surprise, his poems were politically interpreted by French audiences. This repeated disappointment to see his public make of his work a political reading where it did not lend itself to it, pushes us to ask this question: How then to present Darwich? And what image should the French reader have of him in the midst of a heap of clichés abounding in press articles? And finally how to approach poetic translation in general?
