This paper present a comparative study between two control methods : classical regulator PID and robust controller based on advanced frequency techniques H∞ , applied on the automatic excitation control system of synchronous machine (alternators) , to improve stability of a SMIB power system. The computer simulation results (with test of robustness against machine parameters uncertainty), have proved that good dynamic performances and more robustness with the robust H∞ controller on comparison with using classical PID regulator. Our present study was performed using a GUI realized under MATLAB in our work.
