Abstract A language must have a rich and varied metalanguage that covers all lexical domains in order to develop reliable and sufficient lexicographical definitions. Languages that have entered the age of writing many centuries ago, normally, don’t suffer from deficiency in terms of the metalanguage. Unlike languages that started to be written a long time ago, languages with a oral tradition - among them amazighe language - experience shortcomings in terms of language description. This paper deals with amazighe definitional metalanguage. The lexicographer who works on this language tries to find and suggest the right words to definitions that cover all the meaning conveyed by defined word. This communication tries to shed light on the importance of metalanguage in terms of definition and the deficiency that amazighe language experiences in this field. It also deals with the question of neology as a response to this deficiency and all problems neologisms can generate. This contribution tries finally to propose some methods in order to overcome all these problems.
