Abstract

In response to the imperative of sustainable development and environmental protection, many countries have established renewable energy targets and implemented a variety of policy instruments. Using the auto-regressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, the study aims to investigate the impact of economic conditions (oil price and economic growth) and policy instruments (national renewable energy and energy efficiency program) on renewable energy deployment, in the Algerian electric power sector, over the period 1980-2021. The outcomes of causality tests show, in both short and long terms, the existence of a unidirectional link running from gross domestic product per capita to renewable electricity generation. Moreover, the short-run findings reveal a unidirectional link going from economic conditions and policy decisions to renewable electricity production, indeed, the presence of a unidirectional link going from economic conditions to policy decisions. Furthermore, the long-run results illustrate two bidirectional relationships, the first, among oil price and renewable electricity generation, the second, between oil price and national renewable energy program. These outcomes highlight the importance for the Algerian government to improve its energy policies, support renewable energies, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels for sustainable economic growth.
