Teaching History Through Poetry: The Case Of African American Slave Songs And Poems

Authors : Ait Benali Ounissa .

Abstract

This article explores the effectiveness of teaching American history through African American poetry. Therefore, taking its bearing from the new historicist approach as explained by Greenblatt, I will try to show that poetry does not only constitutes a “cultural archive” that is shaped and is shaping the socio-historical context of any nation but is a significant means of teaching history. Starting from slave songs to Blues and Jazz, and passing through sonnets and various poems that express the sufferings of black people in America, this study shows the importance of studying both the text /poems to understand the historical context of their writings in an EFL class.
