From the African Union (AU) defense and security policy, the objectives of this articles are to establish and demonstrate the ambiguity between, the African Union actively fostering integration based on its regions or Regional Economic Communities (RECs), while the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) exhibits characteristics of being weakly integrated into Africa, particularly to the said policy. Therefore, the issue of this contribution questions the reasons for this limited integration of the UMA into the AU’s defense and security policy. This article is based on a multidisciplinary approach, mobilizing international law and as well the international relations sociology. As results, the repercussions of this slow integration extend to all AU policies, especially evident in the domain of defense and security. The AU's defense and security policy faces challenges of ineffectiveness within the UMA region. The prevailing security individualism of states dominates the region, leading countries to selectively engage with specific components of the AU's defense and security system.
