Abstract

The socio-economic environment has always exerted a great impact on people’s morality and meaning of life. The second half of the twentieth century witnessed a fierce conflict between Communism and Capitalism, the thing that led the Americans to cling tightly to their capitalist creed. Capitalism, or the market, and its relation with morality has been one of the controversial issues in the American society. This has become a recurrent theme in post-world war II American Literature and drama in particular. The study is an attempt to show the effect of capitalism on morality and meaning of life in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman (1949).
