Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis is a potential source of a significant handicap, the prevention of which requires early and multidisciplinary management. We assessed its impact on professional activity as well as the impact of a therapeutic education program. Material and Methods: Prospective, uni-centric, descriptive and analytical study, from December 2014 to March 2017. Professional disability was assessed initially then at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months to assess the impact of the educational program. Results: 131 patients, 95.4% of whom are women. The average age is 53.53 years. 23.7% have a profession. The average duration of the disease is 11.20 years. 40.45% of patients are overweight. 50.4% have joint stiffness and joint deformities are noted in 88.5%. The disease activity is moderate in our patients 87% are on Dmards, Methotrexate in 71% of cases. 67.2% are on corticosteroid therapy. The professional impact of rheumatoid arthritis was evaluated according to the professional outcome of the patients. Thus, after educational support and compared to admission, at the last check-up, we see a clear decrease in absenteeism from 16.7% to 6.7%, and a drop in the rate of patients with a long illness and short term respectively from 38.9% to 33.3% and from 22.2% to 6.7%, testifying to the effectiveness of our educational action. Conclusion: In our series, the professional handicap engendered by rheumatoid arthritis is reflected in various aspects consistent with the literature. The therapeutic education action was favorable in our polyarthritis patients; these results are the first in Algeria.
