The Island Of Enlightenment: An Eco-critical Analysis Of Hayy Ibn Yaqzan

Authors : Maafa Sofiane .

Abstract

Ibn Tufayl’s novel Hayy Ibn Yaqzan is considered one of the earliest literary attempts to tackle the issue of man vs. nature. On the island, Hayy does not only preoccupy himself with overcoming the different challenges life in the wilderness poses, but also he rises to the level in which he comes to realize that there is an interconnectedness between man and nature and which it all depends on the willingness of ridding oneself of the philosophy of consumerism and practically start a philosophy of protecting one's ecosystem. The present article attempts to analyze Hayy Ibn Yaqzan from an Eco critical viewpoint. Then, the researcher will prove how Hayy came to understand how the universe operates all through the power of reason alone. Finally, the researcher will culminate with the possibility of reaching enlightenment by achieving the full merge between man and nature.
