Over the past few years, there has been a dramatic increase in the practice of plagiarism among Djilali Liabes University EFL Master Students. Almost every teacher who experienced supervising Master dissertations at the university has been an eyewitness at one time of such unethical academic practices. The negative effect of plagiarism is definitely reflected in the research quality at the university as well as on the academic level of the graduate students. Students who adopt plagiarism to accomplish their final research project often provide different excuses. This paper is a retrospective analysis of the researcher’s supervised Master dissertations and students’ emails to decipher the true motives behind their resort to plagiarism.
