Symbolisation Of Unity In The Portrayal Of Muslim Women Converts In The Algerian Newspaper’s Discourse

Authors : Zerrifi Meryem .

Abstract

This research analyses the representation of Muslim women converts in Algerian newspapers discourse. The prevailing discourse in these newspapers portrays the relationship between Muslim women converts and their non-Muslim entourage as full of refusal and denial ignoring the obstacles they face within the Muslim community. As a reaction to ideologies perpetuated through the Algerian newspapers’ discourse and puts to the fore a total acceptance of Muslim women converts in the Muslim community, this research aims first at verifying the extent of credibility of this discourse, second deconstructs the myth of Symbolisation of Unity as advanced by Thompson J, B. (1990) and sheds light on the difficulties they face after their conversion to Islam. In order to meet the main aim of this research paper, an online questionnaire is distributed to 52 Muslim women converts around the world and posted in a specialized website on June 7th ,2019 https://form.myjotform.com /91444027782560
