This article sheds light on the role of conflict as a trigger for cognitive progress and learning. A particular attention is hence paid to sociocognitive conflict, that is to say, to controversies between several people as to the answer to be given. Thus, in the first place, this contribution examines how conflict can arise from theories on the building of knowledge. Will then the role of conflict in cognitive development and the strategies proposed by some authors be tackled and promoted through the induction of cognitive conflict and the effectiveness of teaching. All in all, this article shows that the conflict was the trigger of doubt and reconstruction. It leads to rethinking the problems and questioning oneself. It is therefore crucial for building knowledge and developing a critical mind.
