Although in Algeria the most diverse wedding ceremonies are cultivated in the different regions, common elements can be recognized. Is a young man of a marriageable age, his mother or his female relative begin to look for a suitable bride for him. In this respect the family of a girl in question is visited by the so-called Brautschauerinnen, in order to obtain an impression of the daughter on this occasion. The girl is asked to make inquiries about her honor, her health, her diligence, her skill and her obedience. Likewise, the other side inquires about the reputation and financial situation of the recruiting man's family. While Brautschau is carried out by the women, it is the duty of the men, mostly of the father or male relative of the bridegroom, to woo the girl's father for the hand of his daughter. The fathers usually negotiate the financial achievements and the formalities of the marriage.
