Secondary School Students’ Language Learning Motivation As A Predictor Of Their Academic Engagement

Abstract

The aim of this study is to perceive the significance of students’ academic engagement to predict their language learning motivation and scholastic success. It seeks, as well, to explore the possible differences in the level of language learning motivation and academic engagement in relation to gender among the students. The sample of the study involved (35) male and female adolescent students from Bourmadia 2 secondary school in Relizane within the age range of 16-20 years and their EFL teachers. Two research instruments were used: (a) the Inventory of School Motivation (ISM) developed by Mclnerney and Ali (2007) to measure learners’ and (b) a semi structured interview. The data collected from these research instruments were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings of the study revealed a moderate correlation between adolescents’ academic motivation and their academic engagement.
