False Cognates: A Minefield For Algerian Non- Professional Translators

Authors : Belkacem Belmekki .

Abstract

A lot of see that translating from French into English and vice versa is easier than from or into another language as Arabic for instance due to the many reasons of similarities between the two European languages. However, this similarity is not always a good omen for it may sometimes lead to false translation when a word is mistranslated upon its spelling similarity to a French or English word. This paper sheds light on the importance of the false cognates and explains how blue translators and non-experienced ones may fall in this trap by translating these very words as they are without checking trustful dictionaries.
