Authors : Achi Fatine .

Abstract

This study is part of an extended research paper that sets out to investigate the attitudes of fifth year ENSC student teachers' attitudes towards the target language culture and their influence on their lntercultural Competence development. The aim is to show- that there is a proportional correlation between positive attitudes towards the target culture and intercultural competence development. lt was, therefore hypothesized that If student teachers were sufficiently exposed to an altemate mediation between the native and the target culture with more focus on the small c cultural elements along with positive attitudes towards the latter, their Intercultural Competence would develop. To test the validity of this hypothesis, a sample of 60 fifth year ENSC student teachers reading for a BA degree in English were chosen. They were administered a Written Discourse Completion Task to measure their intercultural competence in relation to their knowledge about and attitudes towards the small c target culture. The results indicate that knowledge about the target culture and intercultural willingness to communicate are collectively predictive of the amount of, the desire for, and satisfaction with intercultural interaction. More important, the conclusion reached is that positive attitudes correlate positively with target language/culture learning and foster better cross cultural understanding.
