The growth of 12 varieties of Oient was analvsed under the effect of water stress. 77w results were anaysed using Cluster analysis in order to select varieties of contrasting response. Some varielies (e.g. 1, 3, 11 & 13) maintained relativey higherpercentages of growth macler water stress Chan others (e.g. 5 & 2). The dendrogram Fig 1(b) based on 4 variables showed several groups of varieties al a high coefficient of similarity. Only hm groups slave(' separate down to a low similarity coefficient of 55.0. The first of these contains four varielies (1, 3, 11 & 12), the second group contains the rest of the varieties. higher coefficients, the Iwo groups are divided into sub-groups that are less distiacfive The low levels of similarity were recorded between varieties in group (1) and °mer varielies. The lowest coefficient was between vars 12 & 5. Although the 'imber of varieties used in Ibis experiment was rather low for selecting varieties with contrasting responsev sonie varieties differed considerab1y in their growth responses under water stress (e.g. 51, thusjustilving further investigation of their possible biochemical differeaces
