Highly Skilled Algerian Women Exiled During The Black Decade: Transnational Belonging And Political Engagement

Abstract

This article describesan investigation into the extent to which the lackof freedom of thought, the restrictions associatedwith the algerianfamily code, and the increasedlevels of violence againstwomen in the black decadepromptedhighlyskilledwomen to fleealgeria, it has usedthe term diaspora as a concept permitting the study of the social interctions, identityreconstruction, sense of belonging and mobilisation of this groupe of women, who are nowlocated in transnational space. The highly skilled Algerian women conducted in thisresearch often expressed the urge need to creata network of Algerianswho live outside the country but are stillattached to and interested in itspolitical, economic and social progress, and readilysharedideas on how the nation canbehelped to recoverfromit's trauma ( the black decade ), for that to happenitis important to findattachment to Ana imaginedalgeria and the capabilityto re-inventndembrace new transnational identities.
