The European Union continues to adopt a security and deterrent policy in the context of its general strategy to confront the phenomenon of illegal immigration, despite the many threats posed by the security approach to the situation of vulnerable migrants and the need to respect their fundamental rights, which are still the object of violation and encroachment in EU countries. Recent developments have shown that EU countries have strengthened the powers of irregular immigration agencies such as the Coast Guard and border guards, as well as intensifying the use of resettlement agreements. This results in a systematic emphasis on security policy as opposed to marginalization of humanitarian aspects and developmental dimensions in dealing with this phenomenon.
