الملخص

The French colonial disaster in Algeria was so huge that its impacts is still operating on the social, economic, and cultural life of the Algerians; in this paper, making use of the colonial impact on the cultural life, I will shed light on the linguistic reality and its implications on the Algerian identity as a direct result of the French‘deculturation’ and assimilation policies. In fact, it is important to mention that in postcolonial Algeria ‘language’ is one of the most striking problems. The colonial linguistic strategy in Algeria caused a tri ‘linguistic’ and ‘identity’ conflicts among the Algerian elites, i.e., the ruling elites tried (and are still trying) to promote the Arabic language and as a result an Arab-Islamic identity; the ‘francophone’ (French speaking) elites were (and are still) in favour of the French language and an occidental identity; and, finally, the Tamazight elites aimed (and are still aiming) to rehabilitate the Tamazight language and the emergence of a Berber identity. Finally, the aim of this paper is to prove that the ‘idealization’ of the linguistic field, in the Algerian school, led inevitably to the establishment of a weak educational system which produces literacy.
