The present paper aims to study the relationship that may exist between patents and the pharmaceutical industry by focusing on the case of Jordan being one of the leading Arab countries. An analytical approach has been adopted as it suits this kind of research. Findings suggest that the pharmaceutical industry in Jordan has never been dependent on patents, whether new or licensed. Also, Jordan’s pharmaceutical industry has witnessed a steady progress before and after the adoption of TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) agreement. Nevertheless, it appears that the country hasn’t fully benefited from the expiration of old drug patents in setting up new product lines.
