The Enigma Of The Self: An Exposition Of The Black Female Identity Crisis In Toni Morrison’s “the Bluest Eye”

Abstract
The significance of the Black female identity in the stratified predominantly White American society have been under scrutiny for the past half a century. Affiliated with two socially persecuted groups, African American women felt unavoidably compelled to fall under certain societal patterns and paradigms, which expectedly fail to represent their authentic sense of self. The conundrum encountered by Black females in “The Bluest Eye” is in fact aesthetically rooted; Toni Morrison vividly portrayed the destructive outcome of blindingly conforming to the standardized beauty concepts created by a dominant social group, and systematically masterminded for everyone to embrace and adapt to regardless of their cultural backgrounds and skin color. The novel exemplifies Morrison’s unswerving fight against the underestimation of Black women’s existence and the devaluation of their self-worth and identity. الملخص خضعت أهمية الهوية النسائية السوداء في المجتمع الأمريكي الطبقي ذو الهيمنة العرقية البيضاء للتدقيق على مدار نصف قرن من الزمن. بالنظر إلى حقيقة أن النساء الأمريكيات من أصل أفريقي ينتمين إلى مجموعتين مضطهدتين اجتماعيًا، فقد شعرن أنهن مضطرات لا محالة للوقوع تحت أنماط ونماذج مجتمعية معينة، والتي من المتوقع أن تفشل في تمثيل إحساسهن الحقيقي بالذات. المعضلة الذي تواجهها الإناث السود في العين الأشد زرقة هو في الواقع متجذر من الناحية الجمالية. صورت توني موريسون بوضوح النتيجة المدمرة للتوافق العمي مع مفاهيم الجمال المعيارية التي أنشأتها مجموعة اجتماعية مهيمنة، وتم تدبيرها بشكل منهجي بحيث يتبناها الجميع ويتكيفون معها بغض النظر عن خلفياتهم الثقافية ولون بشرتهم. تجسد الرواية كفاح موريسون الدؤوب ضد التقليل من شأن وجود النساء السود وتقليل قيمتهن الذاتية وهويتهن.
