The Representation Of The Algerian Culture And Identity In The Algerian Middle And Secondary School Efl Textbooks

Abstract

The teaching of local and other cultures and the development of the learner identity has become key aspects of English foreign language (EFL) textbooks. Most of the previous studies on the Algerian EFL textbooks have focused on the place of the target culture. This paper, rather, explores the representation of the Algerian culture and identity in the Algerian middle and secondary schools EFL textbooks. Two checklists (one about culture and the other about identity) were used to evaluate the place of the local culture and identity in the aforementioned textbooks. The findings show that the Algerian EFL textbooks incorporate the home culture and identity. However, the secondary school textbooks focus less on the Algerian social norms and values. Moreover, all the textbooks in question show that the Algerian community is in the doorway house between modernity and tradition. Consequently, it is suggested to better represent the Algerian culture as it is to avoid the risks of acculturation and to build the third space, encompassing the dynamic interaction of various cultures (Kramsch, 1998).
