Cultural Untranslatability: Language And Culture In Susan Abulhawa's Mornings In Jenin

Abstract

In order to investigate the limitations of using foreign language as a tool of expression and cultural representation in Arab Literature, Susan Abulhawa’s Mornings in Jenin is examined from the standpoint of cultural and translation studies. Therefore, two major issues will be highlighted: the relationship between culture and linguistic representation, and the untranslatability of culture. Both will be studied in the context of Anglophone Arab Literature. This investigation culminates in asserting the fact that all sorts of communication take place in relation to and within a cultural setting. The latter can serve as a tool to facilitate or as an obstacle that hinders communication. Hence, deploying Arabic expressions within literary works that are originally written in English is a necessary procedure for the comprehension of the cultural context of the work in question.
