The purpose of this paper is to investigate writing teachers' teaching practices, their perspectives, attitudes and perceptions about the use of literary texts, mainly short stories, in teaching writing as a method to develop and foster students' creative writing competences. The aim of the paper is also to explore the criteria that teachers of writing use in their selection of literary texts as well as the major difficulties they face in their selection. In light of that, a questionnaire administered to sixteen teachers of writing at the English department at the University of Larbi Ben M'Hidi . Data treated statistically and the results demonstrated positive perceptions and attitudes of teachers towards the integration of appropriate short stories in the writing curriculum. Accordingly, implications indicate that teachers of writing should diversify their teaching methods and their materials, and acknowledge the central importance of integrating appropriate short stories in the teaching of narration.
