This paper discusses one of the largest topic of research in comparative politics, it is the debate about the factors which affect or ultimately limit democratization, the core question here is. Do democracies emerge as a consequence of economic development? Or Is there some level of development beyond which democracies are more likely to fall? We will begin with the major assumption about this issue advanced by lipset in 1959, when he argued that democracy is strongly related to a country's level of economic development, then we discuss early qualitative and quantitative studies on the topic, as well as influential critiques of modernization theory and recent developments in the studies on socio-economic development and democracy, especially studies of Przeworski, Boix, Inglehart and Welzel, The final section summarizes and concludes.
