Abstract The Arabs have been practicing poetry criticism from time immemorial. It is indeed a known fact that Jahidh is one of the famous acient critics who wrote on poetry and poets, he, at the end of his study, differentiated between good and bad poetries. It would not be an exaggeration, therefore, if we said that jahidh wrote his books “AlBayan wa tabyeen” and “Kitabul-Hayawan” in order to clear the ambiguity in Arabic poetry with regards to words and meanings, this may account for the reason why some scholars are of opinion that Jahidh wrote the two aforementioned books with the sole aim of criticism. However, it could be deduced that Jahidh authored the two books as his own contribution to Arabic Literature generally and criticism specifically, this made it pertinent for us to put the books into consideration when attempt is been made to carry out critical study of Arabic poetry.
